New Adobe type manager release Adobe Systems has released Adobe Type Manager Deluxe 4.0J for the Macintosh. Users can make their own customized sets of fonts, and send or receive the customized fonts to/from other users. When the user opens a document for which a font is either not active or not installed, ATM Deluxe 4.0J will automatically activate it or utilize the most similar existing font. The package retails for \19,800, but is being offered for \9,800 to current Adobe software owners.

Run Windows programs on your Mac Connectix (maker of Speed Doubler & RAM Doubler) has introduced a Japanese version of Virtual PC, which enables a PowerMac to run Windows (3.1, 95, and NT) and MS-DOS applications. Virtual PC uses such elements as the Intel Pentium MMX instruction set and SoundBlaster Pro to emulate a standard Windows PC environment. Virtual PC recognizes Ethernet, CD-ROM drives, printers, modems, and other Mac peripherals and accessories, so no additional hardware is needed. Virtual PC, which comes with Windows 95 OSR2 on CD-ROM, requires a Mac with 604, 604e, or 180-MHz and higher 603e PowerPC processor, 22MB of free memory, KanjiTalk 7.5.5 (or Mac OS 7.6), and at least 150MB of free disk space. The retail price is \39,800. PC-based fingerprint scanning This spring, Fujitsu is set to release the world's first PCMCIA (Type II) card-based fingerprint scanner for mobile PCs. The card enables the PC to read and digitize a fingerprint in less than 1.8 seconds. Within 20 milliseconds, the accompanying software can identify the fingerprint by comparing it with prints contained in a database, and prevent any unauthorized person with a stolen password from logging onto the system. The price had not been set as of press time.
A new ATOK from Justsystem Justsystem has released ATOK 11, the kana-kanji conversion system preinstalled in Ichitaro Office 8 and Ichitaro 8, as a separate package. ATOK 11 comes with JAC (Japanese Automatic Correction), a real-time sentence structure and context checker. It can handle the latest 7-digit postal codes. ATOK 11 runs on a Power Macintosh with Kanji Talk 7.5.3 or better, or Windows 95 or NT Workstation 3.51 or 4.0. The package retails for \9,800, but is available as an upgrade for \5,000 until January 31. A 10-copy corporate site license is available for \85,000. A Japanese website management and creation tool Allaire has released Japanese version 2.5 of its HomeSite Web editor/management software for Windows 95/NT. For website creation, HomeSite 2.5J offers HTML and preview modes (including server-side scripts), spell checking, global find and replace (throughout files, folders, or projects), various templates and scripts, and table and JavaScript "wizards." Support for Web application development is also available. For efficient site management, HomeSite will check for broken links and images, and estimate file download time. Thin desktop monitors from APTi Apti has released three thin TFT color LCD monitors. The 16.1-inch LM-1280 supports SXGA (1280 x 1024) resolution and sells for \790,000. At just 26-cm thick, it saves desktop space, and heat release is minimized. The 14.5-inch LM-1024A supports XGA (1024 x 768) resolution and sells for \348,000, while the 12.1-inch LM-801H supports SVGA (800 x 600) resolution and sells for \218,000; both are 19-cm thick. The LM series monitors can be used with IBM-compatibles, NEC 98s, Macs, and various workstations.
High-speed postscript laser printers Hitachi's new high-speed Typhoon laser printers feature Adobe PostScript Level 2 functionality. The Typhoon 16, targeted at office use, can print 16 A4 pages per minute at 600 dpi (dots per inch). Typhoon 8, suitable for design use, prints at 1,200 dpi. Both models incorporate a 50-MHz RISC processor. Prices have been reduced by 35% from previous models; the standard Typhoon 16 (with 2 kanji fonts) sells for \368,000, while the Typhoon 8 (with 18 kanji fonts) goes for \1,228,000. |
