TT-387 -- Paper-thin batteries, ebiz news from Japan

With its great public transport system, Japan is one of the world's truly personally mobile cultures. There are portable gadgets of all kinds, not least of which include cell phones and music players. Have you ever wondered just how many batteries are needed annually to feed this mobility? We decided to check, and apparently Japanese consumers own more than 100m cell phones and 200m+ personal entertainment and information devices. As a result, they consume about 4.6bn batteries worth JPY700bn (US$5.98bn) yearly, of which about 78% are primary (disposable) batteries.

FW-95 -- Getting Back on the Frugal Bandwagon

Living a frugal lifestyle, like dieting, requires some willpower. Once your will to pinch pennies diminishes, it's hard to continue. Face it: a spendthrift lifestyle is just plain EASIER. Unfortunately, a lack of certain set frugal habits can create "yo-yo" frugality - much like yo-yo dieting, where the same 10 kilograms are lost, and gained, and lost, and gained. Except in this case, it's the same 100,000 yen that is saved, and spent, saved, and spent.

Japan Inc Magazine -- Ten Years of Business Analysis on Japan

At its core, J@pan Inc is about technology innovation in Japan. Specifically, it covers the products, companies, and people behind such innovation; more broadly, it touches upon related topics, such as VC funding, cultural trends, and academia-industry cooperation. Our mission is to cover these matters objectively, without preference, exaggeration, or boosterism.

Japan's prolonged recession is leading to government deregulation, a more flexible and transparent corporate culture, and changing attitudes in society toward entrepreneurialism. The nation's technology innovation, already cutting-edge, is increasing thanks to more entrepreneurs, intrapreneurs, and meritocracy-based work environments in which good ideas survive and flourish. Fresh concepts and entirely new industries are being born in Japan.
