After decades of fruitless crystal-ball gazing, it looks like wearable computers are just around the corner -- really. Pioneer has developed the thinnest electroluminescent (EL) display yet and, at only 0.2 mm thick, it has the potential to be incorporated into clothing as part of the ultimate in portable PCs. EL is one of the newest display technologies and is tipped to muscle in on the lucrative global LCD market in the near future. Other applications for flexible EL screens included 'real' digital paper, cellphones that can be rolled up and, once production costs start to show economies of scale, flat-screen displays that are a lot more affordable than current plasma screens. |
