What is your company's current business focus?
Access Technology, Japan was established in 1992 on the premise that Tokyo needed a value-added recruiting firm focused exclusively on high-tech start-ups. Initially, more than 90 percent of our business was in the communications technology field. In fact, we did the start-up recruiting for almost all of the major companies in this area in the early 1990s, and we still dominate this segment. Today, ATJ focuses exclusively on foreign capital information-technology-related searches, covering the full spectrum of opportunities within this niche. We place candidates in the full range of available positions within our client companies, from president/country manager and pre/post sales management to the sales team and engineers. Sixty percent of the work we do is for technology vendors, such as hardware manufacturers, software companies, etc., and forty percent of our business deals with internal IT management and staff, such as MIS and developers for financial institutions. All we do is IT-related recruiting, fifteen hours a day, at least five days a week. We are completely focused on this. This is all we do, all day long. Because we always take the high road, we are confident that our candidates and clients will experience a level of satisfaction and service that they cannot find elsewhere. In almost all cases, ATJ becomes the client's preferred recruiting-services vendor in less than a month's time. Our aim is to define a higher standard of excellence for recruiting in Japan.

What sets Access Technology apart from your competitors? Besides being able to get results efficiently, without the toxic side-effects that are unfortunately so common in the recruiting industry, here are some of the things that set us apart:

1. Honesty: You always get the truth and a square deal from ATJ.

2. Candidate-oriented: The interests of the candidate are paramount at ATJ. Companies come and go, but we will do business with the candidate for life. The candidate and his family's well-being are more compelling to us than the client's shareholder value. By focusing on the candidate over the last seven years, we have come to have the best pool of high-quality candidates. We have found that this policy ultimately works to the client's best interest as well.

3. Head-farming vs. head-hunting: Rather than thinking of ourselves as headhunters, we view our role as head-farmers. The idea is that we hope to have an ongoing, long-term relationship with our candidates, not a one-shot, spot-market deal. We help develop our candidates' careers. Think of us as growing apple trees in a grove, not hunters opportunistically bagging a game animal in the dark forest.

4. We are your recruiting partner: We are not paid for introductions. Our clients pay us for having a successful process that gets results and helps them achieve their objectives in Japan. This process includes helping the clients develop recruiting programs in Japan so that they can hire the people they need to grow. Interestingly, these same programs assist in retention as well. We truly have the clients' best interests at heart and go the extra mile to ensure they are successful. We have a symbiotic relationship. If the client is not successful and growing, neither are we. We do not view clients as renewable resources that can be slashed and burned for a quick buck. We are with them over the long haul.

5. Teamwork within ATJ: Frequently, the biggest competitor for any consultant, whether it be in recruiting, accounting, or elsewhere, is the fellow sitting next to him. That is not the case here. In ATJ, we are part of a focused team with high cohesion and morale. Our turnover is phenomenally low. Since 1994 only three consultants who have made it through our rigorous initial six-month training program have left the company. This means that the people in Access Technology, Japan are enjoying stable, healthy, and exciting employment in an excellent working environment. This results in a better standard of service for our candidates and clients. Twenty people pulling together as one team can achieve far more than fifty individuals competing against one another.

6. Focus on ethics and doing the right thing: We do not poach from our clients. We do not call the people we have placed and encourage them to move. This would be in bad faith. We are gentlemen. Confidentiality is of the utmost importance and we are bank-vault tight with sensitive information. At every stage in our process we ensure that we are doing right by our clients and candidates alike. By the same token, we always treat our employees generously and fairly.

7. We always put the interest of our candidates and clients ahead of our own: Indeed, this is so. This, we believe, is the key to providing a higher standard of excellence in all our recruiting and human resource services.
