SCO
FORUM
The
Santa Cruz Operation Ltd. (SCO), the leading shipper of UNIX on Intel, recently
held its thirteenth annual conference amongst the redwoods of the University of
California's Santa Cruz campus. After several years of uneven financial performance,
this year's event came on the heels of record quarterly financials. Even though
the mood was upbeat, the event appeared to have fewer attendees and exhibitors
than in previous years and SCO's refusal to provide attendance figures only reinforced
this impression.

TRADOS:
Translating 'success' into 55 Languages
It's important to understand the difference between automatic translation and
the sort of 'translation memory' product TRADOS is offering. Most professional
translators quickly grow tired of repairing machine translation output. Equipped
with a 32-bit translation memory, TRADOS' most popular product, Translator's Workbench,
memorizes the translator's work.

Mating
the elephants -- ERP implementation in Japan
Mating elephants is one of a zookeeper's toughest jobs. It involves
a lot of bellowing and trumpeting, occurs at a high level, and takes two years
to produce results. This, oddly enough, is a pretty fair description of the typical
ERP implementation project in Japan, except for the part about happening at a
high level -- which perhaps is a cultural clue as to why Japanese corporations
are facing extra costs, increased time, and reduced functionality from their ERP
efforts.

Commentary
on Pricing Online Media Access
(October 1999
CJ)
In Niall O'Keefe's October feature, he made the point that media website operators have to carefully consider the pricing and access model that will be most agreeable to their customers--a topic near and dear to CJ Online's heart. The commentary was provided by Peter Brantley, Director of Computing Services at the University of California's College of Letters and Science, who points out that obtaining a content access solution involves technical as well as legal and other issues.
